Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20 1964) was an American politician, attorney and vice president of United States. Harris is the first vice president to be female and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she was the United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland and attended Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her professional career started in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected as San Francisco's district attorney. Harris was appointed Attorney General of California in 2010 and elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election making her the second African American woman to serve in the Congress, and the first South Asian American American to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator, Harris advocated for federal de-scheduling of healthcare, and cannabis legalization as a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. National attention was gained for her shrewd questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual misconduct.
